Peter pursued his dream of a northern capital. It took enormous efforts and a significant number of lives to translate the dream into reality. But finally, in 1712 St. Petersburg became the capital and people started coming here on their own account. The best European artistic, literary and musical talents were welcomed and encouraged to settle down in the new growing city where foreign architects, mainly Italian, built fantastic palaces and awe-inspiring churches. Saint Petersburg

City tour St Petersburg
is considered to be «the northern capital» as well as the capital of arts of Russia. Countless museums and imperial palaces and beautiful canals. White nights in early summer as a bonus. St. Petersburg was founded in 1703, when Peter the Great seized control of the land surrounding the river of Neva during a protracted war with Sweden. St. Petersburg, envisaged by Peter as Russia’s ‘Window to the West’, was moving towards fulfilling its earlier promise in a fast pace and shortly after acquired the state of the cultural capital of Russia which has been kept ever since in spite of any political and social changes.

Peter and Paul Fortress
The fortress is the first settlement and the cradle of the city. It used to be a prison and used to serve as a place of imprisonment for many famous politically engaged personalities. Nowadays it includes the Cathedral of the Saint Apostles Peter and Paul, Commandant’s House museum representing the history of the city, the Engineer’s House, Museum of Space Exploration, the Mint and the Printing Workshops, Trubetskoy Bastion Prison the Neva Curtain Wall archway and more.

The Hermitage
Russia’s most famous Palace and museum, the second-largest art museum in the world. It is located within a complex of several buildings along the riverbanks right in the city centre. In its possession are thousands of art and sculpture masterpieces, archaeological findings and unique craftwork examples, coins, graphics and applied art objects.

Isaac Cathedral
is the second-highest Orthodox church in the world, 101.5 meters high, behind the Cathedral of Christ the Savior of Moscow that reaches 103 meters. There were more than 40 different minerals used for its decoration. The plinth was covered with granite, the walls and floors of the interior of Russian, Italian and French marbles, the columns of malachite and lapis lazuli. In the dome of 21.8 meters in diameter, around 100 kilos of gold were used. Originally it was built as a cathedral but was turned into a museum by the Soviet government in 1931 and has remained a museum ever since.

Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo)
was the town containing a former Russian residence of the imperial family and visiting nobility. Tsarskoye Selo forms one of the World Heritage site. You will walk around the majestic Catherine palace (once the summer residence of the Russian tsars and now a museum) and the surrounding park which is a masterpiece of landscape arts and see the d Amber Room – a reconstructed chamber decorated in amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors, located in the Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo near Saint Petersburg. Constructed in the 18th century in Prussia, the original Amber Room was dismantled and eventually disappeared during WW II.

Sightseeing tour around Moscow

You will not only see the main landmarks of the city, but you will also learn what historical moments they are related to and what where the obstacles that their inventors and creators had to face. The landmarks: St.Basil’s Cathedral, Lobnoe Mesto
(13-meter-long stone platform situated on Red Square in Moscow in front of Saint Basil’s Cathedral was the spot of Imperial decrees announcement and public executions) the Moscow GUM, The Tomb of an Unknown Soldier and many others, Manezhnaya Square, Alexandrovskiy Garden, Novodevichiy Convent (external tour), Sparrow Hills, the Moscow State University, Poklonnaya Hill, Christ the Saviour Chirch.

The Kremlin tour
the major part of the inner Kremlin territory is open for visitors. It’s home to the ancient ensemble of architecture comprising of temples and cathedrals, palaces and picturesque squares. The territory of the Moscow Kremlin is a town inside a city, its creation took many centuries and it still preserves the memorable objects of traditional Russian architecture of XIV—XX centuries. We’ll not only walk around the Cathedral Square, you’ll the famous Ivan the Great Bell Tower (just imagine – back in the past climbing on top of this tour you’d be able to observe the whole city of Moscow!).

Moscow Metro tour
Moscow Metro is rightfully considered to be a unique system of urban infrastructure being the most beautiful, the deepest and the largest of all the similar existent networks of transportation. It has been keeping the status of Cultural Significance Object for quite a long time already. Our tour reveals the answers to many questions arising in curious minds. This Underground City Palace route will teach us not to get bothered waiting for the next train to arrive; we will learn to understand the meaning of those intricate interior patterns.

The Izmailovo Kremlin
is a fairytale-like cultural complex modeled after Old Russia. Izmailovo Kremlin, a wooden complex completed in 2007, was not built for protection as its name suggests. It was established as a cultural center and marketplace loosely modeled after traditional Russian architecture and fairytale depictions of Old Russia. Wander about and you will spot the Romanov emblem of a crowned griffin decorating everything from buildings to fences, as well as a pink statue of Lenin which has caused some mild outrage.

Perhaps the most cheerful holiday in Russia is the Pancake week (Shrovetide). This holiday is considered to come from pre-Christian times, when the Slavs were still pagans.
In the old days Maslenitsa was for remembrance of the dead. So the burning of the figure of Maslenitsa means her funeral, and blini (pancakes) – coliphia. But with time the Russians longing for fun and entertainment turned the sad holiday into jolly Maslenitsa with blini – round, yellow and hot as the sun, sledding and horse sleigh riding, fistfights and mother-in-law chatting. The rituals of Maslenitsa are very unusual and interesting because they combine the end of the winter holiday rituals and the opening of new spring festivals and ceremonies, which were to promote a rich harvest.
Maslenitsa is celebrated during the week preceding the Lent. Every day of Maslenitsa was devoted to special rituals. The celebration will take you through all of them, day-by-day, represented in one interactive performance.

The State Hermitage Museum
The Hermitage, Russia’s most famous palace and museum, is located within a complex of several buildings along the riverbanks right in the city-center. The general exhibition contains millions of art works: paintings, sculptures, archaeological pieces, numismatics objects and other artefacts.

Nikolaevsky Palace Folk Show / Optional
Nikolaevsky Palace today is not just one of the luxury palaces of Saint Petersburg – it is also a place running a magnificent Folk Show “Feel Like a Russian”(Feel yourself Russian). Being a guest of the Palace, you can feel like a real Tsar’s guest.

Submarine C-189
Built at St. Petersburg’s Baltic Factory and launched in 1954, the C-189 is a 613-class diesel-electric submarine that saw 35 years service in the Soviet fleet. Decommissioned in 1990, the C-189 eventually sank in the harbour at Kronshtadt, but was rescued in 2005 by a local businessman and former submariner, who decided to turn the vessel into a museum. The submarine has been fully restored, and guests are free to wander the length and breadth of the vessel, and to touch whatever they want. Entertaining guided tours (in Russian) are provided by former submariners.

Kronstadt
Kronstadt is a town located on Kotlin Island in the Gulf of Finland. In 1703, on the southern part of the island, Peter the Great ordered the construction of a fort to protect the approaches to St. Petersburg from the Swedish navy. One of the main attractions here is the Kronstadt Naval Cathedral. The golden dome of this temple can be seen from almost anywhere in Kronstadt, while it is comparable with Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia in size. The Petrovsky Dock is another must-see.
This dock was built during Peter’s reign, with the active participation of the sovereign himself. Its lock system is especially remarkable – with its help, the dock can be completely drained in just a few hours, something that used to make indelible impressions on visiting foreigners. Pumping out of the water in similar Western docks took weeks to achieve.

Peterhof
Peterhof Palace and gardens are commonly called “the Russian Versailles” and together with the Peterhof town center they are acknowledged as UNESCO world heritage site. The palace estate comprises much more than just one palace, but the Grand Palace is the star attraction. It was build by order of Peter the Great and was intended to outshine all other European palaces. It exhibits many artistic styles, opulence, the preferences of the Russian Tsar and work by master craftsmen. The palace complex covers 500 hectares and includes Strelna, Oranienbaum and Peterhof.

Description of sights, excursions and activities

Excursion “Grozny. Risen from the ashes”
Grozny is a phoenix city, reborn from the ashes in just 10 years. The city was founded in 1818 as the fortress of Grozny, which was part of the Sunzhenskaya fortified line. In 1870, the fortress, which lost its strategic importance, was transformed into the city of Grozny of the Terek region. In the 19th century, the city of Grozny was a major trading and industrial center of the North Caucasus. The rapid growth of the city contributed to the railway and the beginning of the development of oil fields. The main modern landmark and spiritual center is “The Heart of Chechnya” Mosque. The mosque named after Akhmat-Khadji Kadyrov, or as it is also called “The Heart of Chechnya”, is one of the most beautiful and majestic mosques not only of the Chechen Republic, but throughout Eastern Europe. With its grandeur and beauty, the mosque is able to amaze even the most sophisticated esthete.

Excursion to the Kezenoy-Am Lake
Kezenoy-Am, which is also called the “Pearl of the Caucasus”, is located at an altitude of 1870 meters above sea level.
Kezenoy-Am is the largest alpine lake not only in the Chechen Republic, but throughout the North Caucasus. In ancient times, when a mountain collapse blocked the gorges of two small rivers – Khorsum and Kaukhi, below the place of their confluence, behind a giant dam more than 100 m high, the lake spilled. In Soviet times, on the shore of Kezenoy-Am there was an Olympic base for the rowing team. The lake is located in the Vedeno district of the Chechen Republic, near the border with Dagestan, in the zone of beautiful mountain meadows and steppes. Mountain meadows are especially beautiful during the flowering period. Excursion to an ancient village. There is a fortified fortress city named Khoy just in two kilometers away from the western bank of the lake. Its militant and flag towers brood above the canyon. The mountain flanks are furrowed with dozens of artificial benches for farming.
Transfer time: 3 h (one way)

Excursion to the Argun gorge
Part of this excursion takes place along the route, which was important throughout the Soviet Union. The old road leads up the gorge of the swift river Chanty-Argun, then through the mountain passes to Khevsureti, and then to Georgia. On the way you can admire the beautiful waterfall. Water jets break off over a hanging rock from a height of 10.5 meters. The road to Itum-Kali is paved through the limestone rocks. It impresses tourists with its grandeur and beauty. 10 minutes by car from Shatoi on the left, moving towards the Itum-Kale, Nikhaloy waterfalls cascade bring down the water of the Chanti-Argun river. The biggest quest is the road to the waterfall: you need to cross the mountain river along the bridge, climb wide and solid metal stairs upwards. The height of the water fall on the main waterfall is about 33 meters. You will see a hard-to-reach ancient tower on a steep cliff near the village of Bashin-Kali and the famous Ushkaloy twin towers restored in 2011.
