Kazan – The third capital of Russia

Kazan is the Istanbul of the Volga, a place where Europe and Asia curiously inspect each other from the tops of churches and minarets. Kazan is Russia’s self-proclaimed ‘third capital’ after Moscow and St Petersburg (but it is about 150 years older than Moscow!). Situated among forest steppes and vast expanses of taiga, and with the Great Silk Road running through it, the Tatar capital really is a fascinating mix of the familiar and the exotic.
